The survival of mycelial fragments and sclerotia of Macrophomina phaseolina in natural (unsterilised) and sterilised soil was studied as a time-course phenomenon at different tempeture and moisture regimes. Mycelia lysed rapidly in natural soil; its complete disappearance occurred only on the 12th day. Temperature had little effect on lysis of mycelia. High moisture regimes stimulated lytic action, but complete disappearance again occurred on 12th day. Free sclerotia survived upto 300 days both in natural (unsterilised) and sterle soil at all temperature and moisture regimes. However, the rate of drecrease in population was more in natural soil than in sterile soil, and more at lower temperature and high moisture. However, population decrease (85%) at saturation moisture, by 180 days, was sufficient to reduce the inoculum below the threshold level. |

The purpose of this study was to report the first recovery and characterization of Leptospira interrogans (serogroup Australis) from urine of swine in Brazil. The isolate was studied by serogrouping, MLVA, PGFE, and partial sequencing of rrs and secY. It was serogrouped as serogroup Australis, probably serovar Bratislava (titre 1,600), and sequenced as Leptospira interrogans. The MLVA and PGFE profiles also suggested the isolate as serovar Bratislava, since they were indistinguishable from reference strains Balico and Jez Bratislava. This is the first Leptospira interrogans serogroup Australis isolate, probably serovar Bratislava, obtained in Brazil. |
